Over time your radiator hose degrades due to the extreme conditions that the rubber faces on a daily basis. The radiator hose sees temperature above 200 degrees and in the winter experiences below freezing conditions. These temperature cycles put a lot of stress on the rubber which causes soft spots in the hose. The soft spots are structurally weaker than the rest of the hose and are what lead to radiator hose ruptures. Before that happens, you can inspect your radiator hose and feel for any soft spots. If you do feel a soft spot go ahead and replace your radiator hose before you get stranded on the side of the road.
To replace your radiator hose, follow these simple steps:
- Allow the vehicle to cool down before touching the radiator or attempting to open it. Drain the radiator by unscrewing the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator. Be sure to place a drain pan underneath.
- Loosen the hose clamp with a flat head screwdriver at both ends and remove.
- If the hose is seized onto the radiator or at the thermostat, use a utility knife to carefully cut the hose without damaging the radiator.
- Place the hose clamps onto new hose and install the hose.
- Tighten the hose clamps tightly but not so that that the rubber is oozing out of the clamp.
- Refill radiator with a 50/50 mix of coolant and water.
- Leave cap open and start the vehicle with the heat on max. Then push on the accelerator until the RPMs reach 2000 and hold for approximately 10 seconds. Repeat this a few times. What this does is remove any air pockets from the cooling system to ensure that your vehicle doesn’t overheat.
- Install radiator cap.
Tips and Warnings:
This is a straightforward job but can be dangerous if you do not allow the vehicle to cool down before working on it. The cooling system is pressurized when in use and at very high temperatures that can cause severe burns. Always wear protective clothing and eye protection when working on your vehicle.
